Terms & Conditions
1. The service
Class ECG is a teaching-support application operated by ScholarStudio. It allows Teachers to create live class sessions, record attendance, run classroom activities, review participation and engagement, and download attendance and engagement information.
Class ECG supports teaching and administration. It does not replace the professional judgement of a Teacher, lecturer, educational institution, assessor, or administrator.
2. Accounts and authentication
Users may be required to authenticate with Google/Firebase Authentication. Users are responsible for keeping their own Google account and device secure and must not use another person's credentials or impersonate another user.
Class ECG does not receive or store Google account passwords. Authentication information is used only as necessary to sign users in, protect the application, and associate activity with the correct user.
3. Student identity and attendance
Students are responsible for supplying their name and student number accurately. For classroom records, these are the only directly identifying student details Class ECG deliberately collects.
A student is recorded as attending when they successfully join a specific live Class ECG session. Merely signing into Class ECG without joining a live session does not constitute attendance in a class.
Teachers may configure the expected number of students in a class. This allows Class ECG to calculate an attendance rate without requiring an uploaded class list or attempting to identify individual absent students.
4. Participation and engagement
When classroom activities are offered, Class ECG may record responses, completions, response times, and other information needed to calculate or display participation and engagement. A student may therefore be recorded as present even when they complete few or no activities.
Attendance and engagement are separate measures. If a session contains no engagement activities, attendance can still be recorded and engagement may be shown as not applicable.
5. Privacy and data-use commitment
Class ECG collects only information strictly necessary to operate the application and provide its attendance, participation, engagement, security, and reporting functions.
ScholarStudio does not sell, rent, trade, licence, or provide student names, student numbers, authentication credentials, attendance records, participation records, or engagement records to advertisers, data brokers, marketers, or any other third party for that third party's own use.
The service necessarily uses technical infrastructure such as Google/Firebase Authentication and Firebase/Google Cloud hosting to authenticate users and store application data. Such processing is limited to what is required to operate Class ECG and is not a sale, marketing disclosure, or grant of independent rights to use the information.
Further details are set out in the Class ECG Privacy Policy.
6. Teacher responsibilities
Teachers using Class ECG are responsible for:
- using the application only for lawful and legitimate teaching or administrative purposes;
- entering an appropriate expected class size;
- reviewing attendance and engagement information before relying on it for formal decisions;
- protecting any CSV files or other records they download from Class ECG;
- informing students of any institutional rules or consequences relating to attendance or participation;
- complying with applicable institutional policies and legal obligations.
7. Student responsibilities
Students using Class ECG must:
- use their own identity and student number;
- join only sessions they are entitled to attend;
- not attempt to record attendance for another student;
- not interfere with, disrupt, reverse engineer, or circumvent the application's security or access controls;
- use classroom activity functions in accordance with the Teacher's instructions and applicable institutional rules.
8. Availability and accuracy
ScholarStudio aims to keep Class ECG available and reliable but does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. Internet connectivity, browser behaviour, authentication services, cloud infrastructure, device settings, or software defects may occasionally affect the service.
Teachers should review attendance and engagement records where they will be used for consequential academic or administrative decisions. Class ECG may assist with record keeping, but the responsible Teacher or institution remains responsible for the final interpretation and use of those records.
9. Acceptable use
You must not use Class ECG to:
- break applicable law or institutional policy;
- gain unauthorised access to another account, class, session, or record;
- submit malicious code or deliberately disrupt the service;
- harass, deceive, impersonate, or unlawfully monitor another person;
- use student information for advertising, profiling, resale, or unrelated commercial purposes.
10. Intellectual property
Class ECG, its software, branding, interface, and associated ScholarStudio materials remain the property of their respective rights holders. Users retain responsibility for and any rights they hold in teaching material or responses they create or submit, subject to applicable institutional rules and law.
11. Suspension or termination
Access may be suspended or terminated where reasonably necessary to protect the service, other users, data, or legal and institutional obligations, including in cases of misuse, unauthorised access, security threats, or material breach of these terms.
12. Changes to the service or terms
Class ECG may change as features are improved, removed, or added. These terms may be updated to reflect material changes. The current version will be published on this page with its last-updated date.
13. Governing law and contact
These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, subject to any mandatory rights or institutional requirements that apply to a particular user or teaching context.
